What does a dexterous robot hand cost, and why is it hard to build?

The current answer
- 0172.8 percent of the humanoids Unitree shipped in 2025 carried no hand at all. Filing-grade, from the STAR Board prospectus. That single number is the clearest available evidence that the hand is unsolved rather than merely expensive.
- 02Elon Musk has put the forearm and hand at roughly 60 percent of Optimus's engineering difficulty. Company-claimed.
- 03There is no single dexterity number. Each grasp class stresses a different specification, so the metric that matters shifts with the task, and a hand that leads on one is often behind on another.
- 04Hand spec sheets are not comparable as published. Fingertip force, grasp force and wrist torque are three different quantities, and vendors quote whichever flatters the design. Degrees of freedom are often counted to include passive follower joints.
- 05Cycle-life claims are usually unloaded unless labelled otherwise. Current top of industry is 1 to 2 million unloaded open-close cycles, company-claimed. The 1X NEO tendon derates about 20-fold from nominal to three times load, which is the gap between a datasheet and a duty cycle.
- 06Three actuation architectures split the market and none dominates. Tendon, direct-drive and linkage each take a different corner of the tradeoff between hand weight, thermal headroom, fingertip force and in-hand reorientation.
- 07In tactile sensing, the revenue today is industrial rather than robotic. GelSight's industrial surface metrology business is what pays the bills, and its robotics work is a deliberate market-seeding position the company has chosen not to monetise. Every architecture picks a corner of the tradeoff triangle. None dominates.

Loaded and unloaded cycle counts are not comparable. Unlabelled vendor cycle claims are typically unloaded.
How to read a hand spec sheet
Four quantities that vendors present interchangeably and that are not interchangeable.

A useful durability metric is unit price divided by loaded cycles, which balances lifetime against the headline price.
